Global Links Suture Donation Program
Global Links prevents surplus medical materials from going into landfills and re-purposes them as life-saving resources for clinics in under-served areas of the world where medical supplies are necessary to provide even basic care to patients.
In many countries, hospitals that serve the poor lack sutures – surgical stitching material. Since 1989, Global Links Suture Donation Program has been collecting surplus sterile sutures from hospitals across the United States and sending them to hospitals in resource-poor communities. The hospitals that receive sutures from Global Links have made a commitment to care for those unable to pay, and providing this costly material directly to them helps them continue to do so.
For the past decade, UPMC has partnered with Global Links by donating equipment and materials.
By re-purposing these medical supplies and equipment, the environment benefits and so do the communities in need.
