Homeless Children Education Fund Overview

For more than 17 years, Homeless Children Education Fund (HCEF) has worked to identify and educate children from birth to age 24 who are experiencing homelessness. Founder, Joe Lagana spent 40 years as an educator in the Penn Hills and North Allegheny school districts, and upon his retirement in 1999 committed his work to ensuring that homeless children have access to the same educational opportunities as their peers.

Through ongoing advocacy HCEF is able to provide supportive services to youth placed in transitional or emergency housing. The organization offers programs in the following areas to both youth and their families:

  • Youth Enrichment Programs
  • Building Block for Success Afterschool and Summer Programs
  • Gear for Grades
  • Learning Centers/ Resource Libraries
  • Higher Education Grants
  • Mini-Grants and Field Trip Grants
